Board of Directors Profile for John Costen, CFP, CGA
I am currently seeking an opportunity to serve as a member of a company board of directors.
With more than 30 years in business, public accounting, financial planning and business advisory services, I have the experience, knowledge and professionalism required to make a positive contribution on a board of directors or an audit committee. I am a financial and business advisor who thinks strategically, ethically and independently. An experienced negotiator and problem-solver, I have well-developed communication and teamwork skills.
I sold my accounting practice in 2011 after 29 years as a public practitioner. As a Certified General Accountant and Certified Financial Planner, I advised many corporations and individuals on how to resolve and plan for complex tax and financial issues and comply with various tax, accounting, and financial requirements. In addition, I was involved with contract negotiations and strategic planning. In some cases, I was involved at the inception, growth and eventual sale of corporations.
One of my current projects is the on going study and evaluation of publicly traded common share prices for investment purposes.
My planning experience, budgeting abilities, cost-saving experience and risk management experience will help me contribute to the overall effectiveness of a board of directors.
I am currently a member of the Council of the College of Optometrists (similar duties to a board member) In addition I am a member of their Discipline Committee and the Complaints Committee.
I am a Past president and previously served as a volunteer accountant for 16 years of the Rosedale-Bartonville Business Association Inc. I was a member for 25 years until 2011.
I am the Treasurer of the Church of the Nativity.
I was a board member for 5 years of the Certified General Accountants, Hamilton Chapter and I am a recipient of their Distinguished Service Award.
